Capt’n Paul’s Seafood store is staying open. Owner Andrew Skelton was mulling over whether or not to close the Salem store when its lease was up last month, but decided to keep the business going.
In an email, Skelton said he decided not to close because of all the customers he’d miss and he ” just wasn’t quite ready to call it quits.”
He said he was frustrated the way things were going a few months ago. Even though the business was profitable, the price of seafood continued to rise and the hours were long. Skelton thought seriously about selling the business or closing it down.
“I thought I needed a change but a lot of the jobs I found wasn’t worth giving up the last nine years of my life. So I cut some of my hours back and refocused on my business and we’ll see what happens,” he said Thursday.
Skelton has been with Capt’n Paul’s since the beginning. He worked at the first Capt’n Paul’s Seafood in Roanoke and managed the Salem store for the first three months it was open and then bought the business. It’s still open at its location on 827 West Main Street.
While the fresh seafood business remains alive and well, Hometown Family Restaurant on Brambleton Avenue in Roanoke County has closed.
Restaurant owner Jim Ahmed said there was an unexpected death in his family and he must move back to Pakistan.
“I’m very disappointed to sell, but family comes first,” he said in an email.
Hometown Family Restaurant opened in September 2012 and boasted home-style American cuisine. Ahmed is selling all the properties. The price is yet to be determined for the restaurant.
